NATURAL DIETS FOR DOGS | Please feel free to print this page, use and distribute. The information contained herein has been compiled by Patricia Bryan

A nutritional diet should feature prominently in your dog / bitch’s life if they are to remain happy and healthy.

Greens like cabbage, spinach, parsley, watercress, broccoli etc. To maintain a healthy immune system, give raw or steamed. (Minerals = calcium, manganese, zinc, potassium, iron. Vitamins = A, Bs, C, E, K)

Root vegetables like carrot (beta-carotene), beetroot, swede, parsnip, turnip, potatoes, celery etc. Give raw or steamed — carrots must be peeled and potatoes can be cooked in skins. (Minerals = manganese, zinc, potassium. Vitamins = A, Bs, C)

Cereals like porridge oats, brown rice, brown spaghetti, barley, rye, buckwheat macaroni, various pastas, wheatgerm, wholemeal bread etc. For healthy nervous system and heart. (Minerals = iron, magnesium, zinc, manganese, phosphorus. Vitamins = B family (except B12 in eggs, cheese & milk))

Fruit like grapes, apples, bananas, all berries, pineapple, pear, kiwi fruit etc. For healthy blood vessels, arteries, veins, capillaries etc. (Minerals = calcium, manganese, zinc, potassium, iron. Vitamins = A, Bs, C, E, K)

Seeds and nuts like sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, linseed etc. All variety of nuts, lentils, split peas, barley etc. For a healthy immune system, heart, veins, blood and fertility. (Minerals = manganese, zinc. Vitamins = E)  

Oils like grapeseed, sunflower, safflower, olive, sesame, wheatgerm, evening primrose. (Minerals & Vitamins = essential fatty acids of linolenic, linoleic, arachidonic — essential for cells — and prostaglandins which help with the overall health of the body)

Honey as natural as possible with least amount of additives. Full of Minerals & Vitamins and other nutrients. For immediate energy as it goes straight into bloodstream.

Apple cider vinegar and no other! To help digestive system and to help prevent build-up of calcium (kidney, bladder, gall-stones) and acid around joints. (Minerals = calcium, magnesium, phosphorus)

Water: filter all water to help remove as many negative elements as possible and to save your dog / bitch’s kidneys doing the work.  

Dairy produce like milk, cheese (cottage/hard), yoghurt (natural live goats’), tofu, soya, eggs. For healthy bones, teeth and muscle. (Minerals & Vitamins = various especially calcium)

Meat, fish and poultry: if you give a good variation of the above foods you will only need to give a little meat, fish or poultry. One cannot farm as intensively as it is done today, with animals living so closely together, without the use of hormones, antibiotics etc. In turn all these drugs and stress go into your dog / bitch.

Just some things for you to think about! Don't forget that if you decide to feed your dog a more natural diet you should introduce it gradually. Don't suddenly stop feeding their tinned / dried food, and switch to a natural diet, or they may suffer from an upset stomach. Mix a little more in each day and gradually withdraw the tinned / dried food. Start with something simple like grated apple or carrot and just watch to see how much they enjoy the texture and flavour.
