KEFIR | Read about what kefir can do for you and / or your pet's health. Kefir seems to have proved extremely useful in treating Daisy's colitis

Kefir is a balanced and nourishing fungus-like food that can help relieve most intestinal disorders. Kefir originates from the Caucasus and has for hundreds of years been enjoyed by the local population who predominantly enjoy good health and longevity. Kefir is easily digested and cleanses the intestines thus reducing flatulence and creating a healthier digestive system. It provides beneficial bacteria and yeast, vitamins and minerals, complete proteins and contributes to a healthy immune system.

Because kefir is a live food it does require daily attention but don't worry, this isn't difficult, and if you purchase kefir grains you'll receive full instructions. The milk in which kefir is grown can be drunk or used in cooking and you can eat the fungus if you like...or give a piece to friends so they can enjoy its benefits. Well cared for kefir will grow in size by just under a third every week.

Kefir has shown to be beneficial in the treatment of:

  • ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)

  • Cancer

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME

  • Colitis

  • Crohn's Disease

  • Depression

  • Herpes

  • IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

Kefir has been used to help patients with AIDS and is also used to promote proper bowel movement. It can also help eliminate unhealthy food cravings by making the body more nourished and balanced. It also has a tranquilizing effect on the nervous system and thus has benefited people who suffer from sleep disorders.

Although not currently listed on their website you can buy kefir grains from herbaticus (the herbal supplement people). You can also try the kefir shop based in the Scottish Borders. Or visit Body Ecology's (American based) website about kefir where you can read lots more about it and make purchases.
